In Her Words: New Artisan Debut from South Africa

Dear Ibu Allies,

The Ibu Movement has officially become our first international marketplace and I am beyond thrilled for UDO & HARMONY to be part of this dedicated community. It’s a huge milestone for us. I've had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing Americans at our Watershed store in Cape Town, South Africa, who make up a big part of our wonderfully supportive community. Now, I get to tell them about our new availability in their own backyard—it is a dream come true!

My name is Harmonie Mbunga and I am the founder of UDO & HARMONY, a South Africa-based brand dedicated to telling African stories and sharing our crafts. By innovating on traditional techniques, we breathe new life into them, bestowing upon them a deserving dignity and honor that lives on. The African continent is filled with heritage, culture, talent, and craftsmanship and we strive to create new modern heirlooms to preserve them, and our stories, through refined contemporary design.

The name Udo holds special significance, meaning peace in the Igbo language of Nigeria. I was drawn to its soothing sound and pleasant pairing with harmony—a play on my own name and a personal claim to the brand's identity. This rebranding is not only a reflection of my own journey and a second chance to rediscover my vision, but also a promise to cultivate peace and harmony for myself, our team, and our customers.

I was thrilled this year when the Ibu Movement reached out with interest in our Zuri Cardigan. This cardigan is a concept I held close to my heart for years. I work with a family-owned company whose masterful makers’ skilled hands transform our vision into a reality of the highest quality. The women are true artisans of their craft and I am honored to work alongside them.

The name Zuri means beautiful in Swahili, a language spoken in many African countries. Each cardigan is a wearable work of art, and represents the rich cultural African heritage and values that inspire me. We add each tassel by hand with a French twist and knot at the ends, taking over one hour per cardigan to complete. The intricate pattern knitted into the fabric tells stories of bravery, courage, wealth, good fortune, and tradition. It also holds a deeper significance, embodying my personal journey of resilience, trust, and determination—symbolizing the unwavering commitment to pursuing one's dreams, even in the face of adversity.

Every purchase from UDO & HARMONY not only supports our enterprise but also celebrates the remarkable women who bring our ideas to life with passion, precision, and dedication. Our partnership has sparked a beautiful cycle of growth, and our mutual success has a direct impact on the lives of these skilled makers. Thank you for being a part of this cycle of women supporting women!

With Gratitude,
Harmonie Mbunga
